It is Finished

Rosie did a spectacular job tonight... 12 puppies in all. I'm blown away by her strength and fluidity of birth. That sounds strange huh? If you haven't seen a dog give birth, or talked to a midwife, it will sound weird. What I've learned is whether with humans or dogs, there's a healthy flow to birth. For example, a momma dog gives birth to a pup every 30 mins and near the end, before her last 1 or 2, she might take a break for 2 hrs or so. If this exceeds 4 hrs, there's some concern. A healthy "flow" and "progression" to birth. When things slow too much or momma starts to act strange, it's a sign something needs a bit of help. As humans, our bodies give birth best when we are warm, feel safe, feel loved, and the room is dark. But if our mind is buzzing or we have experienced trauma we refuse to talk about, or many other things, this can actually stop labor! Babies have "crowned" multiple times just to sink back into momma, because she's struggling emotionally. These amazing facts are passed down through midwives for generations. But when you go to be a breeder... there's not a lot of ANYONE to pass you knowledge or experience. It's a hard-knocks learning experience and I've had a few extra than others for whatever reason.

That said... when my vet spoke boldly without doubt that she'd need oxytocin to push out 10-12, I was weary and watchful. Her last litter was 12, but still.

Then I remind him we put her on a raw food diet to strengthen her health and adversity to Texas allergies that plague every dog. He was very adamant we needed to feed her puppy food from Purina or she wouldn't have the energy and stamina to make it through without grains to be her fuel.

So I prayed. And Researched. And prayed. And looked at buying Purina. And worried. And finally remembered Rosie has been on a grain free diet all her life! đŸ€Ł....So I stopped worrying and I increased all her protein, fish, organ meat, and calcium.

And I watched her like a momma hawk during labor.

She barely took ANY BREAKS y'all!!! After pushing out TEN pups, one every 20-30 mins, she stopped for 1 hr, then pushed out another, stopped for 40 mins and pushed out the last!! Her last birth and all of Angels births there was a solid 2-3 hr pause at the end. And all the births they look EXHAUSTED at the end. Rosie?... She looked great.:)

I was so proud of my momma girl, and also excited to see that a healthy, deeply researched based raw diet, can give her stamina beyond what other foods did. And y'all should SEE Samson!! Our retired old man has puppy fur and the energy if a 2 yr old pup!!

We are richly blessed with happy healthy momma & daddy pups. I'm so glad these 12 pups have finally arrived! 😍
